The night is already late. Someone asks for “one more show.” You know what that means.
Do not just rip the tablet away. Hand them the next thing.
What not to do
Leave the iPad in the bedroom “just this once.” Negotiate three more minutes. Start a new plot when their eyes are already glassy.
What to do instead
- Five-minute warning they can see (timer, not a debate).
- Lights warmer and lower. Phone stays in the kitchen.
- One short story — paper, or a slow voice in the dark.
- Same exit every night: water, tuck, door.
Boredom is the feature. A ritual you keep beats a perfect speech you give once.
